Horseback Riding
Cures Illnesses
Children and adults of all ages and mental
or physical abilities have experienced great benefits from the sport
of horseback riding. Rehabilitation programs nationwide have
witnessed this remarkable fact. We have heard that the interaction
with animals is known to help patients in hospitals, by relaxing
them and offering positive stimuli. Horses are potentially one of
the top on the list of animals who posses this calming,
rehabilitating effect to humans through horseback riding lessons.
Here are nine significant reasons to start horseback riding lessons:
-
The sensory-motor and balancing skills
used during horseback riding strengthen the ‘core’, or
midsection muscles in the human body, including legs, abdominals
and back muscles. Balancing also offers valuable rehabilitation
exercising needed for motor-skill development.
-
Focus and concentration
are improved while learning the ‘controls’ or ways to
communicate with and direct the horse.
-
Leadership skills, such as planning ahead will be introduced,
since the human is ultimately leading the horse while practicing
horseback riding.
-
Self-Awareness,
both visual and spatial are cognitive or consciousness skills
that will be recognized while a person is relating to the horse
and the animal’s natural behaviors.
-
Consideration and respect are
accomplished when a person is relating with or handling horses.
The size and strength of the horse is to be revered as they
choose to please the human companion.
-
Self-Confidence
is acquired when a person progresses to a rewarding
comfort-level among these powerful animals.
-
Patience is a human trait that is strengthened while caring
for and riding horses.
-
Positive Stimuli is evident in horseback
riding participation, which is immediately beneficial for the
treatment of depression or a lack of self-esteem.
-
Assessment strategies
are exercised while we must use body language and cues, that the
horse is trained to understand, in order to handle or correct
the horse.
Professional
trainers and specialty programs are available for any individual to
have the opportunity to benefit from the horse experience. Troubled
teens, individuals diagnosed with depression or anxiety, special
needs such as physical, mental or social challenges are all
encouraged to seek a qualified horse program. The benefits are
immediate, the steps may be small, and the opportunities are
endless.
